The hotel Le Bristol opened its doors in the 1920s, a decade obsessed with its own modernity, and immediately carved out a lucrative niche catering to the rich and cosmopolitan. Since then it had steadily expanded, infiltrating neighbouring plots to add more rooms, suites and facilities. That it had done so without ever endangering its reputation as an institution for the stylish and the select said much for its management's acumen.
