Few buildings in Paris were as immodest in their intentions as the Opera House. Built for an Emperor, an entire neighbourhood had been ploughed under to provide a triumphal avenue over which it could hold sway. Its richly-decorated facade announced that poetry, music, dance and song, embodied by vast allegorical statues, had at last found their true home within its walls.
