He was in his daughter’s bedroom.
The Sternbergs had a two-bed apartment on rue du Poteau in the eighteenth arrondissement at the foot of the northern slopes of Montmartre. Annabelle’s room looked out onto an inner courtyard and did not get much light. This was probably just as well, for otherwise the pink wallpaper and furnishings would have been all the more glaring, and possibly slightly nauseating.
