The prosperous and upmarket streets of the town of Fontainebleau ran right to the forest’s edge, where one of France’s first and
most select golf courses had been laid out. Membership of the Fontainebleau golf club, founded in 1909, was doled out parsimoniously
to the rich and successful, creating a closed world where deals could be struck, a sense of privilege cultivated, and marriages made
and unmade.
