The pont de la Concorde had unusually extensive underpinnings, forcing the river to choose between a series of discrete corridors to pass beneath it, the result of the fact that it was actually two bridges in one – an eighteenth-century original, built with stones pilfered from the ruins of the Bastille, which had later been stretched sideways, doubling in width, to accommodate the traffic of the twentieth century.
