They stepped into a sizeable gravel courtyard, far deeper than it was wide. A long, institutional-looking building occupied one side, linking a porter’s lodge immediately to their right to a high, unadorned chapel facing the threshold they had just crossed. A few terraced cottages, or former stables, huddled half-way along the yard’s left-hand side. Loïc let the door swing to behind them. With the high walls now between them and the street outside they were cut off from the rest of Paris.
