It was the oldest department store in Paris, the only one on the Left Bank, and far more discreet than its brash and more
youthful cousins across the Seine. Designed by Gustave Eiffel, its light iron infrastructure had allowed the construction of
a vast multi-levelled temple of commerce organised like an open-air market whose booths were nowadays each dedicated to a single brand.
