The Meurice was a relatively discreet member of the capital's collection of grand hotels. It had stood on the rue de Rivoli since the
first half of the nineteenth century. Expanded and remodelled several times since then, it maintained a running battle with the Ritz, the
Plaza Athenée, the Crillon, the Bristol, and the Georges V for the custom of visiting heads of state.
