In a city which hosted some of the most celebrated museums in the world, the Musée d'Art Moderne had always been a bit of a black sheep.
A monumental structure, it had been constructed in the 1930s – the Indian Summer of France’s standing as a great world power – and designed from the outset as a showcase not just for art, but for art in its most modern of forms, the art that incarnated the radiant future towards which the nation thought it was striding before the crushing defeat of 1940.
