The fashion house had not taken on a cripplingly expensive lease on one of the tallest shopfronts on the avenue – two and a half stories of glass surrounded by a neoclassical arch, all that remained of the once proud showroom of Panhard and Levasseur, pioneering manufacturers of automobiles, now embedded in a decidedly modern and charmless building – to have the flotsam and jetsam of Paris wash up on their doorstep
