A log glowed gently in the marble fireplace to the left of the winged armchair. A tall, slim glass of champagne had just been deposited on a low table alongside it. To the right, of course, and positioned far enough back to avoid the heat of the flames. This was the bar of Le Bristol. Unobtrusive attention to detail had been the hotelís defining characteristic ever since it had opened in 1925, taking its name from an eighteenth-century English earl famed for his infinite appetite for all things luxurious.
