25 bis rue Benjamin Franklin in the sixteenth arrondissement had a lot to recommend it. Reinforced concrete had done few favours to the city – allowing a host of featureless building to muscle their way onto Haussmann’s noble boulevards – but this had been a pioneering structure. Built before the First World War, its industrial core had been artfully concealed behind a façade of patterned tile that conjured up a vertical mosaic of interlocking rhododendron leaves interspersed with tall windows promising light-filled interiors.
